Develop A Reading Habit

May 16, 2016 Unknown 4 Comments

There are a lot of things that have died over time because of the type of generation we exist in. In the past, human evolution was associated with positive change, growth and development. The practices we stopped were mostly barbaric, uncivilized or added nothing to development. These days, the habits we stop are the ones that are the most important. Take the case study, reading, for example. This is something we use the most part of our day doing: reading updates or stories on Facebook, reading tweets, reading captions on Snapchat or Instagram, reading texts/chats or just looking for online gossip, now these things aren't bad but it's the type of information we obtain from them that matter. A substantial fraction of the youths today don't read informative material. That's why I decided to talk about developing a reading habit.

We all know what reading is so...

...What is a habit?
According to the American Journal of psychology 1903, a habit from the stand point of psychology is a more or less fixed way of thinking, willing or feeling acquired through previous repetition of a mental experience.

So I'm going to say a reading habit is reading to the point where it becomes part of you.
''Why should I be reading?", you ask. Here are a few perks associated with reading.

Benefits of reading

Reading helps stimulate the brain. Just like the body needs exercise so does the brain and the best form of exercise for your brain is reading.

It serves as a stress reliever. We all face different types of stress from home, school, work and relationships. True? We also need a break from these sources of stress. True? Trust me when i say there's nothing like losing yourself in  a great story. Sometimes when I'm stressed out, I just pick up a classic, my best picks are Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen or Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte and get lost in a world that only exists in my head.

Reading increases your knowledge. This is an undebatable fact.

It helps expand your vocab. When you read on a regular there are a million chances that you would come across new words. Words that would become useful when you're short of words. Having a wide vocabulary makes you sound smarter. The truth is that those who are well-read, well-spoken and knowledgeable are more likely to make waves wherever they find themselves than those that aren't.

Reading helps to increase focus and concentration. It enhances your ability to memorize and helps refine your writing skills.

Lastly, reading is the freest form of entertainment. This is as free as it gets guys and the wonderful thing about it is that you can reread the piece to your heart's content.

Now all these things wouldn't happen if you keep reading junk. These wonderful yet basic benefits of reading can only be manifested when you read the right stuff. If you're not a fan, you can start with fictional books then graduate up the ladder step by step.

Enough reasons for you to read now?

Your Views Matter

Your views always matter. I know I have just a few reasons. This is because I can only speak from experience.  If you have more please post it in the comments section. We need more people on our team. Also, if you've tried reading and it just doesn't work for you, put your complains in the comments and we would proffer solutions.

I know. I know. This is a long one. If you're here, you deserve a standing ovation. Thanks for  reading.

  1. Seyi shayy... How are you doing dear, Lovely article I must say. Our generation really needs to substitute a bit of the LIB and tmz for reading a couple of mind stimulating pages a day. Thankfully I picked up this habit late last year and I've been able to read one book a month since January and I'm surprised my head hasn't gotten bigger with the amount of knowledge I've gained .
The wisest and most successful people in the world have always been readers, so drop that remote/phone and pickup a book today!
